3/7/2024 0 Comments Rafter ties hip roofThis support, if it even has value, has 3 other 2x4s connecting them (highlight in yellow in both Pic 2 and Pic 3) to a rafter. Each of the 2x4s still have a vertical 1x4 connecting it to a rafter. The ends of the 2x4s are then connected to the rafters by a diagonal piece of wood (blue in Pic 2). Can I use use 2 12' 2x4s and overlap them 2' to make joists to span the width of the garage? Any thoughts? Long story short, what can I do to support the garage so my walls stop from bowing anymore? It'd be difficult getting home 20' long 2x4s to add more joists. Sorry to be worry, but just want to be as clear as possible since my pics are so dark. In "Pic1", the red line is the 2x4 joist and the green lines are the vertical 1x4s. Probably more reason to protect from uplift. I should mention at two different points on this 2x4, there are what looks to be a vertical 1x4 connecting it to a rafter. Re: Rafter Ties I suspect that since you mostly build nice decks - this roof is open on all sides. Rafter ties or ceiling joists support the rafters and sidewalls under gravity loads, including the dead load of the roof structure and live loads such as snow (above drawing). We decided the ceiling height, then put the plywood on the rafters, opposite where we were relocating the raised collar ties/ceiling joists. Collar ties (or ridge straps) prevent the ridge from separating due to uplift pressure from wind (top drawing, right). This type of roof is also called broken-back hip-and-valley roof because the main hips are interconnected by the rafter of gables on one side and the rafter of the valley on the other. Such buildings may have more than four hips in the roofs, and they form valleys at the inside corners. Center the supports to the plates and insert 2 1/2 screws to lock everything together tightly. Therefore, use 2×4 lumber for the supports and drill pocket holes at both ends. We had to cut sheets of plywood to 14' wide, by 4-5 long, at the point. A hip and valley roof may be part of an irregular structure. The first step of the project is to install the ridge beam for the hip roof.
